Breath Alcohol Testing

Excessive and/or frequent drinking can impair a person’s ability to perform their regular and work-related tasks.

An alcohol breath test is used to detect and monitor the BrAC levels of a person. It is a great way to ensure your safety and the safety of people around you.

Generally, workplaces might require regular alcohol testing to ensure that employees are turning up sober to work and that they can perform their duties safely. Our accredited technicians conduct alcohol breath tests using high quality breathalysers designed for workplace and law enforcement use. These breathalysers are regularly calibrated to ensure accuracy to Australian Standard AS 3547.

How Does Alcohol Breath Test Work

When you call us to conduct an alcohol breath test at work, we ensure an accurate and reliable process. Here’s how it works:

1

Identification

First, we verify the identity of each person being tested by requesting them to present valid identification, such as a driver's licence or employee ID card.
2

Consent

Once ID is verified, we present the employees with a consent form. Consent is a requirement, and we ensure that all employees understand the process and agree to the test willingly.
3

Sample Collection

Our accredited technicians collect the breath sample using a calibrated breathalyser. Employees talk or blow into the device for a few seconds to capture an accurate reading. The process is quick and non-invasive.
4

Onsite Results

The results are available immediately onsite. The breathalyser measures the breath alcohol concentration (BrAC) and displays the results within seconds. Our technicians explain the results to the employees and answer any questions they may have.
5

Additional Testing (If Required)

If the onsite results indicate a positive alcohol reading, we may recommend additional confirmatory testing conducted in line with the Company's Alcohol and Other Drugs policy.

Australian Standard AS 3547

Australian Standard AS 3547 (Breath alcohol testing devices) forms the minimum standard for breathalysers.

Unlike the Oral Fluid Drug Testing Standard – AS/NZS 4760 (Procedure for specimen collection and the detection and quantification of drugs in oral fluid) and the Urine Drug Testing Standard – AS/NZS 4308 (Procedures for specimen collection and the detection and quantitation of drugs of abuse in urine), AS 3547 does not specify how the testing should be conducted but rather the accuracy and physical lab testing requirements of the device.

FAQs About Alcohol Testing Service

What is considered a positive breath alcohol test?

Different employers can set different limits for BrAC levels, depending on the industry. A zero limit is common in many workplaces, however in certain non-safety sensitive roles it may be 0.020 g/210L or 0.050 g/210L. Check your company’s drug and alcohol policy or procedure if unsure.

What is the Australian standard for alcohol breath testers?

While buying any breathalysers, be it for personal, workplace or professional use, the breathalyser should comply with Australian Standard AS3547.

Can you have a positive alcohol breath test without consuming alcohol?

Yes, it is possible to have a positive alcohol breath test without drinking. The reason might be that the device is not calibrated properly, or the device is picking up mouth alcohol content from other sources like mouthwashes, food or drink. It is important to ensure you wait 15 minutes after eating, drinking, smoking or vaping before testing and use a calibrated breathalyser

How long can alcohol be detected in a breath test?

This depends greatly on the amount of alcohol consumed and how well your body processes the alcohol.
